Treasure HuntYou will stop at one place in each of the 15 countries of the European Union, from where you will be asked to collect one 'treasure'. These treasures are answers to questions, which you should write down on paper as you travel along the ©Cyberscope Treasure Hunt.
At the end of the ©Cyberscope Treasure Hunt, you will be able to enter your answers into an interactive questionnaire which will tell you whether your answers are right. The questionnaire is at the bottom of this page: there are 15 questions and a space for each answers. If your answers are all right, the following enigma will be instantaneously resolved by the ©Cyberscope! Each question mark will reveal a letter:

Then, go back to the ©Cyberscope Treasure Hunt text and fly over the Irish Sea to Dublin (2). The question is: how many other languages than English is this WebSite available in?
Lisbon is our next destination. There are not many Portuguese WebSites, but this is one where, if we had the time, we could actually listen to some songs in Portuguese (3). The question is: what is the size of the 'RealAudio Format' file for the following extract: 'A Casa de Mariquinhas' - Alfredo Marceneiro? Is it: 499Kb, 32Kb or 29Kb? From Lisbon to Valencia, is a long distance, which can easily be covered by the ©Cyberscope. At the Universidad de Valencia (4) we have some friends who have worked with us on the ©CAMILLE project. Their WebSite is very interesting and gives access to some home designed teaching and learning resources for Spanish, which you could compare with an increasing number of WebSites in Spanish that the ©Cyberscope enables you to reach. You are asked to find out the colour of the image which turns in the top right corner of the screen.
After Spain, France. There is a lot of material in English in Cyberspace, however there are more and more WebSites in French, quite a lot of them based in universities in America - USA and Canada (Québec...). The one you are invited to discover today is La Redoute, a French mail order company. The La Redoute WebSite is a good example of how businesses in France are investing in the Web for the future. Please, take the time to discover this WebSite. What you are asked to find is the street number where you will find the "La Redoute" offices, the answer is on the La Redoute (5) WebSite. There are thousands of fascinating sites in French Cyberspace, even more if we consider all the Minitel Sites now linked to the Web through the official Minitel Gateway.
But let us leave France to go to Italy, in particular Venice (6). In this WebSite, you can find all the information you require to plan a romantic journey there! The question that you are asked to answer now is: what is the Italian name for Venice? Click on 'DOVE and 'HOTEL' to find out. From Italy, there is only a small sea to cross to get to Greece and several more hours to reach the most southern point in the European Union: a small remote Greek islands called Gavdos. You can find a beautiful colour map showing its location in Greece by clicking here, and even the unofficial Gavdos (7) WebSite. This is the beauty of the Web, enabling small remote communities to still feel that they belong to a network, to a wider community. Although the WebSite is about a Greek island, we are not actually in Greece. So, the question for you here is: where is the WebSite situated?
North of Greece, there are several countries which might perhaps benefit from their belonging to a larger community like the European Union... Today, we will not stop in these countries, which are going through hard times, but aim for: Austria (8). The Treasure to find here is the answer to the following question: what version of 'Real Player' can you download free of charge from this WebSite? In passing, you may want to have a look at one of the videos... Fantastic, no?! If Austria is a land of mountains, lakes and skiing, Germany is the land of... football; or is it? Well, please go to this on-line English-German dictionary (9) and find out what the German word for 'football' is.
Since we are travelling in the European Union, it would seem logical to visit some of the European Institutions. We'll leave the European Parliament where it currently is (in Strasbourg - < http://www.europarl.eu.int/sg/tree/fr/ >) and we go to Brussels, one of the capital cities of the European Union. We'll bring to us the European Union (10) official WebSite, as well as the European Court of Justice (11), situated in Luxemburg. Talking about European affairs, you may - or may not!? - want to see the 'Free Britain' WebSite... Can you answer the following two questions about the European Union: what is the name of the European Union official WebSite and in how many languages is the European Court of Justice WebSite currently described?
North of Belgium, there is a rather small country, where English is spoken by almost the entire population. WebSites in Dutch could be difficult to find, even in the Netherlands, then! Well, try this one where you can actually listen to the Dutch National Anthem and read the lyrics at the same time (12). Our question is: what is the word that you have to click on to access the audio file? Now then, our Voyage in European Cyberspace would not be complete if we did not continue north from the Netherlands, towards Danemark, Sweden and Finland. Here are three interesting WebSites: Michael Guglielmi's (13) curriculum vitae, Swedish Youth Parliament (14) and Ruth Vilmi's (15) virtual language centre. Three personal nordic WebSites, three questions respectively:
