About WELL Language ExercisesThe WELL Language Testing System enables students to take objective language tests on the web, with immediate feedback. The tests are created from a central database of questions by tutors at participating institutions. After a student has taken a test, tutors can access the results to read off marks or to get detailed reports on answers given. There are around 10,000 questions available in French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Dutch and Italian. The questions are organised into sets; the majority of them are grammar-based, but there are sets focussing on lexis and specialised topics such as French Business, German history, Spanish geography and Mexican food. Some of the question sets incorporate pictures. There is also listening comprehension material for beginners in several languages. We are keen to make the exercises as accessible as possible and to provide a wide range of questions. Initially access is restricted to UK Higher Education Institutions, and the “cost” is the submission of one set of 100 questions on a single specified topic for a particular language. Once an institution has submitted this set, its students may access any exercise in any language. The tests you create are not visible to users outside your institution. We have paid careful attention to the security aspect to ensure that the system allows each participating institution to view its own students’ results only. Administration for each institution (creating and updating user accounts for students and tutors, question selection, viewing and downloading results, etc) is as automated as possible, and is carried out using simple tools.
