Description of project

The project will run for four weeks from October 11th-November 6th 1999, and will involve all students from the following Business Spanish groups which I currently teach at the university: Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Advanced 1, Advanced 2. It is envisaged that the total number of students involved will be around 25. The project will focus on activities directly related to the content and objectives of the business language course. It will;-give students the opportunity to practise writing business correspondence-provide the students with specific examples of business correspondence.-generate enough material to start a database of Spanish organisations on the web and examples of correspondence which can be referenced by all students and built on each year.

All students are to complete three pivotal tasks:

1. Locate and research a Spanish web site, according to their remit:
Intermediate 1) A hotel or organisation from the tourist industry.
Intermediate 2) A company/organisation from the retail industry.
Advanced 1) A financial organisation. Advanced 2) A company/organisation from the service industry.

2. Send and obtain at least two correspondence by E-mail(letter in the form of an attachment).
The function of the correspondence will obviously change depending on how many contacts are made, but the intention is that across the board a selection of texts covering requests, explanations, gratitude and perhaps even offers will be produced or received. The production and understanding of business correspondence/reports is a central objective of all business language modules.

3.Based on the web site and specific information gained from the company/organisation, the students will produce written/oral presentations as follows:
Intermediate 1 Factual information such as situation, size, facilities, cost for a potential visitor.
Intermediate 2 Product information for customers on a specific item or range of items, including details such as materials, price, retail outlets, offers.
Advanced 1 Information on the specific structure of a company and the roles of the workforce/ different personnel.
Advanced 2 Information on a specific department and its function, with details of specific activity/activities that are being carried out. E.g. a marketing campaign, the launch of a new product, a restructuring exercise.
