Objectives

The purpose of the project was to produce an on-line second year French language course in semester 2 of the academic year 99/00. The course was designed for students on Single or Combined Honours degree programmes (French Studies, French and Spanish, French and German, Russian and French, French and Italian, European Studies, International Trade, Applied Languages, etc...). This was carried out in order to:
  • Encourage students to use web resources, thereby improving their web
  • skills
  • Foster independent learning
  • Provide supporting resources

Implementation

Once the course was designed, web site structure specifications were given to our IT Demonstrator, Paul Wright, for implementation.
Students were then able to access the class material through the web, using Netscape 4. The content of the web site is listed below:
  • The weekly programme with all tasks to be completed for all classes
  • Notes on letter and CV writing
  • Reading comprehension questions
  • Translation exercises to reinforce grammar points dealt with in class.
  • Essay titles

In addition, the web site featured external links to enable students to carry out remedial work or further reading on topics of interest to their particular courses or for their year abroad:

  • Grammar exercises
  • Dictionaries
  • Translation software packages
  • French resources
  • Jobs/placement search
  • A forum

Students accessed material corresponding to the teaching weeks outside contact hours. They had the possibility to carry out work on-line using a PC. At present, to work from a PC, the students need to select questions and then, paste them into a word processing document before typing the answers, or remotely from a PC, by printing the material. Keys to exercises were given in class and then emailed to students.

Outcome

At the end of the course a questionnaire was distributed to 89 students involved in the project, of which 83 were returned. The purpose of the questionnaire was to find out whether in students' opinion the site:

1)Provided useful links for:

  • Grammar
  • Translation
  • French resources
  • Jobs/placement search
  • Dictionaries

    2) Encouraged learners to use the web for language learning

    3) Enabled learners to improve their web skills

    4) Gave learners more confidence surfing French web sites

    5) Enabled learners to improve their French by surfing French sites

Students were also asked whether the site was user friendly and whether they would like a similar site in their final year.

The results obtained show that the majority of students answered positively to the above questions as shown in the graphs. Click here to see results.

Students found the most useful links to be as follows:

  • Sites providing interactive grammar exercises,
  • Models of CV writing,
  • The French Business site (http://www.francais.affaires.com) ,
  • French resources and dictionaries.
  • "Perhaps we could have some lectures in the computer room with more >grammar links".
  • "Specific times for internet use".
  • "Check to see whether students had used web grammar notes".
  • "Some prioritising with the web sites most useful indicated as there are far too many to visit them".
  • "More help with resources".
  • "The lay out could be improved" Students'comments on their use of the web provided mostly positive feedback:

    1) Positive feedback

"AThe web site is very convenient as I can either access it at University or at home".
"Although I didn't use the links or websites very much, I did find all the links very useful, not only for grammar but for other part of the course as well".

"Some prioritising with the web sites most useful indicated as there are far too many to visit them".
    "More help with resources".
"The lay out could be improved"

  • Evaluation

From the questionnaire responses, the majority of students found that the use of a dedicated web site enhances their web skills as well as their language learning experience, therefore this should encourage further use of web resources in language classes. Moreover, access to on-line resources encouraged independent work, this makes it easier to meet different needs by tailoring web-based resources according to students main programmes (for instance business resources for students on International Trade, translation software packages and dictionaries for students on Applied Languages etc...).

The main lesson learnt from this project is that language learners can benefit from a basic web site as long as the content and the links selected are relevant to them. Further developments will include adding interactive exercises, navigation tools and a tracking system to monitor students' progress and to gain more control over autonomous work.

In conclusion, I would say that this project was a real challenge as it was the first time students were being asked to access the entire semester course on-line. The fact that the majority of students reacted very positively to this experiment made the effort worthwhile.
