WELL Case Studies

The WELL Project supports initiatives to embed the use of telematics in the language curriculum. It has made funding available to individuals or small groups of academics in HEFCE-supported institutions (UK) to encourage uptake of new technologies to support language teaching and learning by people who are relatively inexperienced. The purpose is not to sponsor "state of the art" developments.

Work must involve students. This is an opportunity to assess whether using telematic support makes a positive contribution in a specific learning context. Also, there must be local dissemination of the findings; i.e.: a summary of the project must be presented to colleagues, either in a brief written report or in a Staff Development workshop.

For each project completed, a short report must be sent to the WELL project team, reflecting the experiences of the students and the academic(s) involved.

Examples of typical projects are:

• use of on-line grammar exercises
• authoring comprehension exercises using templates
• putting part of a module on-line to evaluate benefits and costs
• setting up international email links for writing practice/cultural exchange
• listening comprehension using audio news services
• teaching critical use of search engines
• evaluating on-line support tools for translation

All applicants are asked to submit the following information:

• Institution
• Name(s)
• Contact details
• Position
• Language(s) used in the Case Study
• Level of competence in the use of Web-related technologies (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)
• Description of project (250 words maximum)
• Anticipated start and finish dates of the Case Study
